3 Firewall Security Levels: What are they?

firewall security levels

With development of the Cloud, IoT, and other complex platforms companies start employing higher information security. Firewall security and especially firewall security level is one way to keep your data protected.

The firewall inspects the traffic of your company from the internal to external networks. For example, from your local network to the internet. It has the capability to log the traffic coming in. And the one going out. It allows and blocks it according to programmed rules. The firewall use permits three classifications of firewall security level.

What are the firewall security levels?

Management security, physical security, and operational security make up firewall security. Each of them has different access rules. The access privileges are specified for each category. In the three classifications, users start from the least privilege. And they get more access according to their position in the organization. There are established rules and policies to grant access to a diversity of users based on their access level. Although security can act at three levels, a few most common types of firewalls exist.

Among others, the packet-filtering and proxy firewalls are extremely popular. They secure the company network while offering flexibility. The packet-filtering is the firewall that inspects packets according to the rules set. And drops them if they don’t comply. Most common way to protect is by listing the entries – or websites – to access. And denying all others. This is the highest level of security, as the internet is changing continuously. There is not a way to control which websites pop up and which relinquish.

The proxy firewalls act as brokers between trusted – the internal – networks and the external networks. When a data transaction takes place the firewall proxy filters, logs the data coming in. They are more secure because the internal workstation does not directly connect with another device from the outside world. Also, the intruders have lower chances to succeed contacting an internal client workstation.  It also monitors application level information. Therefore, the proxy firewall is known also as application firewall.

Information systems protection using firewall security levels gives better results than prior architectures. However, the cyber security specialists are always on the way to discover efficient technologies to keep unauthorized access out. For more information, contact the iQWeb specialists.
